The Greco Pirelli station in Milan is the first railway station in the Milan area for the lines from Sondrio and Como, and is a very important hub for Northern Lombardy: from this point, different itineraries intersect for Milan - Sondrio and Milan - Chiasso, with regional trains and suburban and international ones. The inner yard has 8 more platforms for passengers, plus several tracks for train convoys.
The passenger building is the original one dating back to 1914, the year in which the station was opened, at the service of Greco Milanese, an autonomous municipality at that time. More than for passengers (then, and until recently, very few), the station was useful from a logistic point of view due to the many industries in the area.
In fact, the station has been operating for decades with its connections to the Tobacco Factory of Fulvio Testi (inaugurated in 1929), the CIWL workshops, the Pirelli factories and the Breda plants (subsequently Ansaldo) in Viale Sarca, which were dismantled at the end of the 20th century, and resulted in a strong urban development that led to the creation of the new and modern Bicocca district, where the new university under the same name and the Arcimboldi theater are located.
The particular feature of this intervention was to allow the transit of trains after only 52 hours from the interruption of the line. The tracks were removed, and afterwards, the excavation for the laying of the prefabricated structures for the underpass took place. Subsequently, the filling back with earth and other preparatory works were carried out for the next stages of work foreseen; at the end, the rails were repositioned. At a later stage, internal and external finishing was carried out to make the underpass ready for users
