The subject of the project was the design and construction of a railway crossing along the Adriatic Bologna-Lecce line, an intervention made possible by means of a double barrel monolith, useful as an access to the sea and as a pedestrian underpass.
The structure also had to connect, by a pedestrian pathway, the shores of the lake with the beach of the seaside.
The main work was the construction of the railway crossing through the monolith, 13.60 meters wide, 7.30 meters high and 18.00 meters in length, excluding the two maneuvering rostrums. It was built off-site and subsequently transported under the seat without interrupting the train traffic. Several problems were faced before successfully completing the works, among which the excavation of the launch pit facing the Adriatic Sea, and the hydraulic push of the monolith carried out using short jacks due to the tight spaces available.
Upon completing the intervention, a viaduct for vehicles and pedestrians was built for the crossing of the new channel with a mixed structure: reinforced concrete, pre-compressed reinforced concrete, wood; a pedestrian crossing across a wooden structure facing the shore was also built.
