Castello di Sant’Andrea

Cupra Marittima (Ap)

The Castle of Sant’Andrea, was once the seat of the old village with the same name and also represented the church (first half of the twelfth century).

It was one of the fortified villages on the Picena coast facing the sea, and because of its position, a unique site with an undoubtedly charming landscape.

It collapsed for the first time in 1569, following a landslide, and was rebuilt in 1592; then, due to a slow but inexorable degradation, it was abandoned at the end of the nineteenth century.

The structure, therefore, was heavily damaged in its original structure and stood in a state of ruin with numerous and widespread collapses in various parts (base, tower, walls) that had compromised its sturdiness.

In particular, consolidation efforts consisted in the rebuilding of the masonry, lime injections and bonding compounds, and protective treatments; in some large areas where the Castle had collapsed, a light metal structure to avoid the total reconstruction of the masonry and limit the restoration intervention was built.

The intervention also saw the construction of a metal structure inside the tower to counterbalance the movements induced by any seismic vibration.

Lastly, the protection of the masonry facades was realized through the application of water-repellent products, and resistant to both atmospheric and ultraviolet rays.

The works also concerned the open space of the surrounding area.

In fact, a natural park with a series of paths (including those for handicapped people and panoramic walkways), including small spaces with benches and a theatre built with ecologically-friendly techniques which can be mounted or dismantled seasonally when required, were created.

The entire area was also equipped with a differentiated lighting system according to the lighting need in different areas
