Castello Conti Calepio

Castelli Calepio (Bg)

The property consists of separate bodies: the main body on two floors, with the Church and the abode for the staff on its side, and on the perimeter of the inner courtyard the barn, stables and caves for the preservation of stocks.

The restoration process transformed all the buildings, as well as the barns and warehouses, into 23 apartments of various sizes, some with two rooms, others with one and a few studio apartments.

All the work was carried out respecting the original structure, with the use of suitable materials and with the approval of the Superintendence for Cultural Heritage. The intervention on the structure was preceded by the full adoption of safety measures, with the removal of the unstable parts: reinforcement and renovation works were carried out on the walls by saturation with lime-mortar injections.

The barrel vaults of the corridors were completely reconstructed re-using the same bricks which had previously fallen out, setting them edgewise. This intervention was carried out using an old formwork system of semi-circular panels. The roof structure was completely rebuilt with supporting lamellar wood beams and rafters, under a corrugated layer covered in the old intact curved tiles, yet adding new ones where missing.

Particular care and attention were paid to the desalination of the underground rooms which were also treated with dehumidifying plaster; however, they presented water seepage and a well for the collection of water which was appropriately protected.

Lastly, it is worth mentioning the total restoration of an internal staircase carried out by hand, with the treads and rises in Sarnico stone. New wooden fixtures were made respecting the existing ones in abacus.
