The Malizia palace, owned by the Municipality of Torgiano, is located in the historic center of the enchanting Umbrian countryside and overlooks Piazza Manganelli, characterized by the main church of Torgiano. The building, which has an almost square shape, did not present significant levels of decay, nor did it have serious cracks in the structures, which are made of masonry, generally of broad thickness, in rough ashlar and parts in solid bricks. The floor slabs were also in fair conditions: most of them in wood (as well as the coverings), some had steel beams and small vaults or hallow flat tiles (added part).
The restoration was made to create a facility for fairs and exhibitions on the ground floor; a library and a newspaper library with reading rooms and a small congress room on the first floor connected to the tiny room of the former Malizia Tower, from which an external staircase built as a safety ladder; and finally a municipal historical archive located on the last floor, in the attic.
From a structural point of view, the masonry was reinforced by closing the niches, making injections with lime mortar, thickening of some sections, strengthening the floor slabs by substituting only the decayed wood, and by constructing thin reinforced concrete slabs.
Partitions which had been added in recent times were demolished to recreate the original spaces, thus bringing to life a fascinating superfetation.
The closure of the porch on the east side represented the intervention with the greatest impact, whereas the other sections remained as they were.
The corridor on the ground floor acquired an “urban” function by connecting the church square to the inner courtyard, which has become a public square, refined by the presence of an ancient well, and gathers the historical aspects of the site made up of the former Malizia Tower (1300), the Malizia Building and the Chiattini Building
