Bastione di Porta Napoli

Civitella del Tronto (TE)

Located in the lower part of the Bourbon Fortress in Civitella del Tronto, the largest in Europe, the tower is located next to Porta Napoli, the main access to the town. The building dates back to the years of the Aragonese domination, 1430/1450.

The renovation work carried out to enhance the value of the Bourbon fortress also included mechanized connections between the town and the fortress through a complex system of escalators.

Due to its location and size, the defensive tower was supposed to assume the new role as a starting station and thus recover its central and essential position which had been lost through the centuries, also because of its evident condition of abandonment and decay.

Several archaeological findings took place during the work (a natural tunnel in the existing rock layer, some wrecks of masonry resulting from the collapsing of the ramparts following the dismantling of the fortress by the army of the House of Savoy from 1861, the original wall of the trench). Therefore, design modifications and caution were required, such as the realization of the projected tunnel in a rototranslated position by creating side walls with micropiles and sprayed concrete
